The International Dictionary of Women's Biography
Jennifer S. Uglow, Compiler and Editor, Continuum, New York, 1982

This reference work is a basic library must. It features more than 1,500 biographies of leading women from many different periods. Subject Index is very helpful, under the categories: public life, cultural life, physical achievements, colorful characters. The latter category includes "national heroines," "soldiers and spies," "frontierswomen and pioneers," "beauties, lovers and society leaders," "occult practitioners, witches and mediums," "criminals; pirates, pickpockets and poisoners."
