Two Voices from Nigeria:
Nigeria Through The Literature of Chinua Achebe and Buchi Emecheta

Many teachers use Chinua Achebe's novel "Things Fall Apart" to teach about changes in village society during western colonial contact. This unit provides excerpts from that novel and others by Achebe which are coupled with those found in the works of the female author Buchi Emecheta. Through this approach both male and female views are represented in an exploration of specific Nigerian themes and periods. Critical thinking questions accompany the excerpts. Activities using African proverbs and poems by Nigerian students are included.
